Meet our Founder & CEO

My name is Dinai (Da-Nae) Robertson, I am a 27 year old Black Fat Femme from Queens, NYC. I grew up around a family and community of “go-getters”, entrepreneurs, and hustlers; so, I never lacked drive or commitment.

I have been planning a sustainable health and beauty company since graduating from undergrad in 2016. Needless to say, I kept putting it off. The events of 2020 has made me realize life is too short to place my dreams on hold.

As an 8th generation Black-American Femme, I decided that I needed to create something sustainable for my family and I. I hope for The Kopper Butterfly to be a household brand that I can pass to generations. This business venture will create wealth that is transgenerational by just highlighting beauty in an individual that already exists.

With Love, Light and Lashes,

Dinai

Why did we create a sustainable and ethical brand?

To have a sustainable brand, such as The Kopper Butterfly, is to care about the impact the company makes on mother earth. To have an ethical brand is to consider how products and services will affect everyone involved, from production to the end of the products life cycle.

We decided to acknowledge that we get one earth and that every single person we encounter is valuable and deserves a product that maintains the same consideration.

Why vegan silk?

Silk has always been seen as the ultimate stamp of luxury. I remember learning of the Bombyx mori (or the silkworm/silk butterfly) along with the silk road in 5th grade science. My teacher explained how hard the insects work and the intricate methods in which generations of indigenous peoples created silk. What better material to use for a company called ‘The Kopper Butterfly’ than a material traditionally made by a member of the Lepidoptera (Moth and Butterfly) family?

Although we appreciate the beautifully natural method silk is created- we don’t want to destroy the live of such beautiful creatures. In researching alternative materials, we came across Vegan Silk. Peace silk is vegan because it allows the silkworm to emerge out of the cocoon naturally. Fibres from the damaged cocoon are then spun together forming a silk which has the same luxurious feel as Organic silk, with a raw appearance.

Our eyelashes and all of its materials are biodegradable and will not harm the earth in the long run.
